gridComm Launches Small Form-Factor OFDMA Narrowband Power Line Communication Modules for Street Lights and Industrial Control Applications

GC8800 Addresses Noise issues and Delivers Reliable Communications for Deployments

Singapore, January 7, 2014 - gridComma provider of power line communications (PLC) solutions that enable the transformation of the notoriously noisy power grid into smart grid, today announced its new GC8800 small form-factor, low-cost Power Line Communication (PLC) module which is based on the industry-leading gridComm GC2200: an OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) Power Line Communication Transceiver. The intelligent small form-factor PLC module is a complete hardware and software networking solution. When powered with a DC15~18V@300mA power supply with an external coupling circuitry installed on the base board, it functions as a full system-level PLC modem. Employing transparent protocol with auto-registration, auto-discovery and auto-recovery algorithm, the software automatically self-adapts to varying conditions on the power lines with the most optimal data routing paths, output power, channel frequencies and redundancy. Highly configurable, the module enables quick time-to-market deployment and greatly shortens R&D time allowing engineers to focus their system development without having to worry about the challenges of building a complicated PLC system which could consume several men-months.

The PLC module is designed for use in small and tight enclosures especially for applications such as Smart Lighting Control, Automated Meter Reading (AMR), Industrial/Home Automation, Alternative Energy and M2M. It is first used in gridComm's MJX-100-X-P Digital Power Supply, an IP67 waterproof LED driver for street light application, and has been deployed in certain cities in China.

"The small form factor of gridComm GC8800 PLC module is a perfect fit for our street light LED products. Not only it is robust, it also provides a cost-effective way for communication over power lines enabling the transformation of traditional street lighting into smart, energy-aware, remotely managed monitored networks, which greatly enhances our LED products with value-added features", said Dr. Paul Zhang, CEO of DR. LED Pte Ltd, a leading LED lights solution provider from Singapore.

The GC8800 is available now for evaluation and smart grid system deployment.
